Top Signs You Could Benefit From Therapy for Anxiety or Stress

  • It’s there almost all the time. Healthy stress is transient — it comes and goes during periods of busy-ness, transition, or struggle. But when stress and anxiety become chronic, they can take a toll not only on your emotional well-being, but your physical health.
  • It’s getting in the way of your work. Paradoxically, stressing out at work can lead to some hardcore procrastination and feeling utterly blocked. You might also find yourself having trouble paying attention or making mistakes on simple things.
  • You’ve stopped taking care of yourself. Are you so stressed you’ve been forgetting to eat? Staying up until 2 am to triple check your PowerPoint is perfect? Maybe you’ve been feeling too anxious to make it to your favorite yoga class. If self-care is suffering, your anxiety may have reached an unhealthy level.
  • You’re feeling physically ill. High levels of anxiety and stress can cause nausea and stomach issues, muscles so tight your massage therapist is both horrified and impressed, susceptibility to colds, and general feelings of exhaustion and fatigue that don’t go away, even when you’re rested.
  • You can’t enjoy life. You can’t remember the last time you had a day where you felt carefree and playful. Even when you do make plans with people and things you love, your mind is elsewhere and you can’t wait to get home.

Do any of these examples ring a bell? Therapy for anxiety can help.

Anxiety and stress are incredibly common, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take them seriously. In fact, these are by far the most common reasons that clients seek therapy at Stella Nova.

Learning how to manage your anxiety and stress levels better can have a huge impact on your quality of life. That means you’ll be able to spend less of your time fighting off panic and more time on the things you really care about, at home and at work.

When you work with a Stella Nova therapist, you’ll learn how to understand your stress and anxiety better, and develop a new toolkit for managing them when they come up. Our clients tell us that not only are they able to better handle anxiety-provoking situations, but their anxiety comes up less frequently and less intensely over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have anxiety?

A licensed therapist or your primary care physician can diagnose anxiety disorders, such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, or Panic Disorder. However, if you think you might have an anxiety disorder, you can complete a screening online that can help you determine whether further evaluation might be helpful.

Can anxiety go away with therapy?

Anxiety is highly treatable with therapy, and sometimes also benefits from the addition of medication. We can target it in different ways depending on its cause and your personal goals.

Whether or not it totally “goes away” is a more complicated question. Occasional and transient anxiety is a normal part of the range of human emotions—and has a helpful function, motivating us to protect ourselves against potential harms. Therapy won’t (and shouldn’t!) eliminate that emotion from our lives. Where anxiety can become problematic is when it’s prolonged, too intense for the situation, or causes us to act in ways that are counter to our wellbeing. That’s what therapy can help with.

For some people, anxiety may be a chronic condition to manage. Other people “recover” in the sense that they no longer meet criteria for an anxiety disorder after treatment. Either way, therapy can be an extremely helpful tool.

How does therapy help anxiety?

Therapy can help anxiety in a number of ways, including:

  • building skills to regulate your emotions and calm the nervous system
  • responding more effectively to external situations creating anxiety
  • challenging negative or unhelpful thought patterns
  • helping clients stop avoiding people or sitautions due to anxiety
  • improving quality of life, even when anxiety is present
  • and providing a supportive and validating space to heal.
What's the difference between anxiety and stress?

Stress is the experience of our capacity being overwhelmed by the demands being placed on us, whether mental, physical, or emotional. It’s typically focused on current situation, and will usually fade when the situation resolves—although it can become chronic when the environment is persistently overwhelming.

Anxiety is the response to an anticipted danger or threat, whether internal or external. It’s typically focused on anticipating what’s going to happen in the future.

Stress and anxiety can show up separately or together. Both can be accompanied by tension, restlessness, increased heart rate, insomnia, and other physical symptoms.
